📰The Canadian job market is increasingly rewarding "AI Fluency" over basic technical knowledge. The article highlights that employers aren't necessarily looking for engineers who can build AI, but rather "AI-Augmented" workers who can use tools like Gemini or ChatGPT to increase their output. For those in or nearing retirement (or pivoting careers), the focus should be on Prompt Engineering and Workflow Automation. The data shows that roles listing AI skills carry a significant wage premium (up to 56% in some sectors) and that AI competency is now a top priority for 73% of employers, even in small businesses.
TLDR: You don't need a computer science degree to stay relevant. Employers are paying a premium for workers who know how to use AI to "lighten the load." Focus on learning how to automate your mundane tasks and drafting workflows with AI to make yourself un-fireable.
📰As the 2026 job market becomes more selective, career experts are warning job seekers to be just as critical of employers as they are of candidates. The top three red flags identified are:
Vague Day-to-Day Responsibilities: If a hiring manager can’t explain exactly what you’ll be doing by 10:00 AM on a Tuesday, it usually signals a disorganized role or a high-turnover “chaos” environment.
The “Family” Metaphor: Using the term “family” often acts as a smokescreen for lack of boundaries, where “undying loyalty” is expected in exchange for unpaid overtime or late-night messages.
Desperation in the Process: Being rushed to say “yes” or seeing a role that has been open for 6+ months without a clear reason suggests either a toxic culture or “ghost job” tendencies where the company isn’t actually ready to hire.
TLDR: An interview is a two-way street. If the company calls itself a "family," can't describe your actual tasks, or seems desperate to hire you "yesterday," proceed with extreme caution. These are often signs of a role that will lead to burnout faster than a paycheck.
