Happy Monday friends!
This week i officially started a new advisory role for a brand I’ve been following and admiring for a long time.
This brand is also in the career coaching & recruiting space but has over 2M followers, a podcast and has been featured in multiple press and media publications. I am not at liberty to announce what brand this is, but I hope I can share in the coming future!!
What struck me about this was, I received a verbal offer in my first video chat with the founder because he was blown away by what I have accomplished and curated with this newsletter community. No reference check. No take-home assignment. The following week, I signed and returned a work contract.
If this isn’t evidence enough that you need to start prioritizing your personal brand over your resume, then i don’t know how else to convince you. And I don’t mean content creation. I mean literally your personal brand-how you show up online, your LinkedIn bio- does it have the right tag line? Do you have your portfolio and your projects linked? Do you have recommendations from past or current managers?
I am excited to see what I can accomplish in my new role and I will definitely share my learnings with you along the way.. 😃
Feeling stuck in your job-search? Burnt out and looking for your next career move, but not sure where to begin? Want to understand the backdoor to landing jobs fast? Grab a cup of (virtual) coffee with me and we’ll dive into all of those things!
🚨 If you apply to any job you found through WFH Mama Mail, add this to the ‘How did you hear about this role?’ field on your application: WFH Mama Mail Newsletter — it helps me track which listings are landing and keeps me motivated to find even better opportunities for you! 🍁
📰Backdoor References And 4 Other Underestimated Influences In Hiring
TLDR: Employers don’t always call the references you gave them. A Zety survey of 1,000 US workers found 37% learned a prospective employer had contacted someone they never listed, and LinkedIn makes those connections easy to trace.
So keep your reputation tidy, and line up references beyond former bosses: people you’ve managed and peers give a fuller picture. Small stuff counts too, like personalized thank-you notes and quick, clear scheduling emails between rounds. And prep differently for phone, video, and multi-round interviews.
