A few weeks ago I did something that scared me a little; and I’m ready to tell you about it.
I sent a cold LinkedIn DM to an executive at an organization I genuinely wanted to work for. No job posting. No referral. Just a direct, personalized message expressing my interest.
She responded. We set up a virtual chat. It went well, like really well. In two weeks I’m meeting with the rest of her executive team to discuss how I can get involved and in what capacity. Her words: my energy and background were exactly what they’re looking for.
This is the hidden job market in action. And it works.
Every single 1:1 client I’ve worked with has heard me say this: if you want to find a role faster, stop waiting for job postings and start doing strategic outreach. Here’s exactly what I did:
Find an organization you’re genuinely excited about — ideally an SME, not a large enterprise. Get specific about why you want to work there and why you’re a strong fit.
Identify a decision maker on LinkedIn and send a personalized, direct message. Not a template — a real one.
Prepare for the call like it’s an interview. Bring questions, your elevator pitch, your resume, and most importantly — your ask.
Follow up. Reaffirm your interest and include a small “freebie” — a recommendation, an idea, a resource. Proof of your value before they’ve even hired you.
