According to Greenhouse, one of the leading ATS software, their data shows in the third quarter of 2025, the average job opening received 242 applications — nearly triple the amount in 2017, when the unemployment rate was at a comparable level. “That means that when someone submits a resume today, they have the abysmally low 0.4% chance of actually getting the job. (That's just for the average job. At the big-name employers, the odds are even worse.)” -Aki Ito, Business Insider.
I want to offer 2 pieces of advice when it comes to increasing your odds of landing a job:
Network alongside volume applications. Message your network to let them know you are open to work, and expand your network to include people you don’t know currently working at companies you want to work it. See mass applications as extra insurance but don’t rely on it alone.
More often than not, apply with a referral. As your chances of landing an interview can improve drastically. Referrals are sought from a current employee of the company or even better- department, and can be done through cold outreach networking and coffee chats.
